The Hidden Cost of Low-Cost Massage and the Truth About Labor Trafficking in the Wellness Industry
Youâve seen it before. The â$30 massageâ sign. The walk-in special. The chain spa with deals that sound too good to be true.
It looks like self-care.But sometimes, behind that price tag, thereâs a cost youâll never see.
Across the United States, and right here in Iowa, labor trafficking and exploitation quietly hide behind words like âwellness,â ârelaxation,â and âspa special.â Workers are being underpaid, overworked, coerced, or even trafficked under the disguise of massage.
Itâs hard to imagine. But this is happening in plain sight.
This is not healing. This is harm disguised as care.
â ïž Whatâs Really Going On
There are more than 13,000 massage businesses across the U.S. operating as fronts for labor or sexual exploitation. They often appear legitimate, but inside, workers may be forced to live on site, have their IDs taken, and work long hours with little to no pay.(Source: State of New Jersey Commission of Investigation, 2024)
Some are large franchises that push unrealistic session quotas, paying licensed therapists as little as $15 an hour. Others are unlicensed storefronts where people are exploited through debt, threats, or fear.
The common thread?Profit over people.Volume over wellness.Production lines instead of presence.
This model burns out good therapists, devalues the craft, and erases the soul of massage.
đ The Iowa Reality
It is not just happening in big cities. It is happening right here at home.
Des Moines:Â Police rescued three women from a local spa after discovering they were victims of forced labor and commercial sex. Their IDs had been taken.(Source: KCCI News)
Bettendorf (Quad Cities):Â A woman who managed multiple local spas was charged with pimping and conspiracy. Investigators found cash-only transactions, workers living at the business, and evidence of coercion.(Source: KWQC News, 2025)
Le Claire:Â Two women were charged after undercover officers discovered sexual favors being offered under the guise of massage.(Source: KWQC News, 2024)
To fight this, Iowa lawmakers passed House File 452, giving law enforcement more tools to investigate human trafficking and unlicensed operations in the massage and cosmetology industries. And the Iowa Network Against Human Trafficking (NAHT)Â is raising awareness about the thousands of illicit spas across the country that use the word âmassageâ to hide abuse.
The truth is simple. It is here. And awareness is the first step to change.
đĄ What to Watch For
If the price feels too good to be true, pause. There are often warning signs:
âą Prices well below local averages
âą Windows covered or blacked out
âą All-cash transactions
âą Workers who seem fearful or unable to speak freely
âą No visible licenses for the therapists
âą Pressure to âupgradeâ or engage in inappropriate services
If something feels off, trust your gut.Report suspicious businesses to local law enforcement or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 888-373-7888.
đ€ Why Supporting Solo Practitioners Matters
When you choose a solo practitioner or a small business owned by a licensed massage therapist, you are choosing integrity.
You are supporting someone who:
âą Is educated, licensed, and accountable
âą Believes in trauma-informed, consent-based touch
âą Values presence over profitâą Operates from care, not quotas
That $110 or $210 session at an independent studio isnât expensive. It is honest. It is sustainable. It is ethical.
đŻïž The Power of Choice
Every dollar you spend is energy.Every booking is a statement of what you value.
When you choose a small business or independent therapist, you help dismantle the systems that exploit both clients and practitioners. You create ripple effects that lead to fair pay, safe environments, and real healing spaces.
Ask about licenses.Ask who owns the business.Support the spaces that feel grounded, transparent, and safe.
Massage should never feel like a transaction. It should feel like coming home to yourself. The therapist who holds space for you should also be held with respect, fair pay, and dignity.
