Important Note: Understanding Onyx’s Role at Rebel Wellness

One of the most important things I want clients to understand is this:

Onyx is a service dog in training.

He is not a therapy dog, emotional support animal, office mascot, or part of a treatment service.

His presence within the Rebel Wellness environment is part of structured training and environmental exposure while learning how to calmly and safely exist within public and professional spaces.

There is a lot of confusion online about service dogs, therapy dogs, emotional support animals, and what those roles actually mean. Social media has unfortunately blurred many of those lines, and I believe clarity matters.

At Rebel Wellness, professionalism, consent, and client comfort come first.

Some days Onyx may quietly rest within the studio while continuing to learn calm settling, neutrality, and public access skills. Other days he may remain home depending on the day, training goals, client needs, or simply because he needs a day off too.

Paying attention to his nervous system, development, confidence, and overall growth is important to me. Just like people, dogs can become overstimulated, overwhelmed, and burned out when constantly pushed beyond their limits.

Part of responsible service dog training means recognizing when rest, decompression, and slower days are needed.

His role is not to interact with clients unless invited.

His role is not to replace therapy, healthcare, mental health treatment, or professional wellness services.

And most importantly, his presence is never forced upon anyone.

Clients are always welcome to request a dog-free session with no explanation needed.

That boundary matters deeply to me because I understand that every nervous system is different. Some people feel more regulated around animals. Others may have allergies, fears, trauma histories, sensory sensitivities, cultural preferences, or simply prefer a dog-free environment.

All of those experiences are valid here.

Part of trauma-informed care is recognizing that healing environments are not one-size-fits-all.

That philosophy extends to every part of Rebel Wellness, including how Onyx’s training is handled within the studio environment.

At the end of the day, this is not about creating a trendy wellness experience.

It is about building an intentional environment rooted in respect, regulation, professionalism, and choice.

And honestly? Some days his biggest accomplishment is simply laying quietly through a sound bath without providing unsolicited husky opinions to the room.

Progress. 🖤
